"Caregiving is essential for keeping people at home and out of nursing homes. But we were surprised by the size of the increase from 1998 to 2012," says Claire Ankuda, M.D., M.P.H., the study's lead author and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at U-M's Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation. "As we see more of an emphasis by seniors on staying in their homes, and valuing their independence, and as the size of the senior population grows, we need to be thinking as a society about potential ways to help caregivers, and ease the strain it can cause."

Most elders in India who need caregivers do not get one because of various reasons. We need help from each one of you :
- It is tough for caregivers to adapt to new environment. Help them get adjusted to your family. There may be cultural differences which we need to educate.
- Soft skills is provided by us but they will appreciate any mentoring and tutoring you give.
- We instruct them not to use mobile phones when they are on duty. Creating specific time zones for usage helps everyone.
- If they are rude or arrogant, please inform the concerned manager.
- Caregivers appreciate appreciation. Catch them doing good!
- Caregivers feel better when you give fresh, home cooked food.
